Imagine this for a moment.
I walk into your shop or office with a poster and a pot of glue. I find a nice clear area of wall, and paste up a poster, advertising my company to all your visitors.
What would you do?
I agree.
And I’d deserve to be covered in the glue, as well!
But somehow, this whole scenario seems to have escaped all those businesses who think it’s OK to do exactly this on other company’s Facebook walls.
They find local companies who have a big presence on Facebook, and go ahead and paste their advert onto the wall.
Perhaps I shouldn’t berate the people doing this too much, as they are at least doing something on social media. They’ve realised that putting adverts in magazines or on the radio is a waste of time these days, because people coming to Lanzarote have decided what they are going to do weeks before they actually arrive, and they are using social media to make those decisions.
So what should they be doing to get their message out there?
They just need to start to interact with the pages they are targeting. For example, if they come to our Lanzarote Information Facebook page, and “like” and “share” our stuff, and comment on our posts, our readers will see their brand, and be exposed to it each time they do so. And we’re likely to come over to their pages to do exactly the same.
They also need to focus on being interesting, fun and informative on their own pages, so that people actually enjoy reading the pages and want to stay engaged with them.
Think social gathering. Think about the interesting people you sometimes meet. Emulate them.
Social media isn’t rocket science – it’s actually really simple.
So please stop spamming Facebook walls, or I will come into your business with my pot of glue!
